Fort Thomas, KY

Perched on high bluffs overlooking the Ohio River, Fort Thomas is a leafy, historic suburb just minutes from downtown Cincinnati and Newport. The town originated as an 1880s U.S. Army post named for Union General George H. Thomas, situated safely above the river valley's floodwaters. Today, a 102-foot limestone water tower still marks the entrance to the old military grounds. Rather than disappearing after the army left, the former base became Tower Park, turning old officers' quarters, the Mess Hall, and wooded grounds into an active, everyday part of the community.

Even though the city has no bridge of its own across the river, easy access to Interstate 471 and Route 8 makes commuting into downtown Cincinnati or nearby Northern Kentucky universities straightforward.

Tower Park serves as the community's primary gathering spot. Its 86 acres feature sports courts, playgrounds, hiking trails, and a stone amphitheater with a regular summer concert series. Residents pick up local produce at the farmers market inside the historic Mess Hall, gather for annual events like the Merchants & Music festival and the fall Pumpkin Walk, or catch local sports on the weekends. Highland Hills and Rossford parks add more green space and quiet trail networks, keeping outdoor recreation close to home no matter where you settle.

Some neighborhoods near Town Center and the park have historic preservation guidelines, so check local exterior design rules before planning renovations.
