Fort Thompson, SD

Fort Thompson is the largest community on the Crow Creek Reservation and the headquarters of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe in central South Dakota. The reservation was established in 1863 along the Missouri River, and the town's present-day civic map includes the Crow Creek Agency, tribal offices, and services connected to tribal government. The name honors Clark W. Thompson, an Indian-affairs superintendent, but the place is defined today by Crow Creek sovereignty and its role as the reservation's main community.

Big Bend Dam and Lake Sharpe sit just southwest of town. The Army Corps of Engineers' project reshaped the river country, generating hydropower and flood-control infrastructure while opening public water and land for fishing, boating, camping, and hunting under state and tribal rules. Fort Thompson also carries the history of older agency and settlement sites that were moved or flooded during Missouri River dam construction. Roads, tribal administration, BIA programs, school routes, and the lake all meet here, making Fort Thompson a reservation headquarters as much as a census-designated place.
