Fort Totten, ND

Fort Totten sits along the southern shore of Devils Lake in northeastern North Dakota, serving as the administrative and community center for the Spirit Lake Nation. Most tribal services, government offices, and local gatherings are based here, making it an anchor for families living across the reservation. Daily life is quiet and closely tied to the outdoors, with convenient access to some of the state's best fishing and boating on the lake.

The town is also known for the Fort Totten State Historic Site, one of the best-preserved 19th-century military posts in the country. After its time as an army garrison, the site operated as a Native American boarding school for decades. Today, more than a dozen original brick buildings still stand, housing a museum and exhibits that tell the complex history of the grounds. Fort Totten combines this deep local heritage with the everyday rhythm of a small lakeside tribal community.
