Fort Wingate, NM

Just east of Gallup along Interstate 40 and historic Route 66, Fort Wingate is a quiet rural community bordered by Navajo Nation and Zuni tribal lands. Framed by striking red sandstone bluffs and the forested foothills of the Zuni Mountains, the area offers plenty of open Southwestern scenery. It has a long military background, starting as a 19th-century cavalry post and later serving as an army ammunition depot, which gives the area a distinct historic backdrop alongside its everyday small-town calm.

Today, the community is anchored by the Wingate schools, which provide local education, boarding options, and programs dedicated to Navajo language and culture. While the decommissioned military district itself is largely restricted to preserve its historic adobe quarters and parade grounds, the surrounding area is an active home for families and school staff. Residents enjoy easy access to hiking and trails in the nearby Cibola National Forest, paired with a quick ten-minute drive into Gallup for groceries, healthcare, and dining.
