About Fortescue
Fortescue is a community and census-designated place in Downe Township, Cumberland County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The 2020 census counted 189 residents. The community is located on the state's southern coast, on the Delaware Bay, surrounded on three sides by marshland. The area was named for John Fortescue, a local property owner at the time of American independence. Fortescue's local map joins its older history to the places and landscapes that still shape the town today, all within the wider New Jersey setting. The local scoop is how Fortescue's history still shows up in the places people visit, work, learn, and meet. During the late 1970s and mid 1980s, Fortescue experienced the best fishing it had ever seen.
