About Fortuna

Fortuna is a small Moniteau County community west of Jefferson City, set along North Moreau Creek and Missouri Route 5. The creek runs east toward the Moreau River, while the highway points north to Tipton and south to Versailles, giving the place a clear connection to central Missouri’s farm and county-seat roads. Fortuna’s post office dates to 1882, and the community took its name from Fortuna, the Roman goddess of fortune. That little piece of classical naming feels out of scale with the surrounding countryside, which is exactly why it sticks.

Fortuna lies in a landscape of rolling fields, creek bottoms, and small roads that lead toward the Missouri River country. Its location near Jefferson City puts the state capital within the wider orbit, but the CDP itself keeps a rural footprint. North Moreau Creek and nearby Little Richland Creek send the local drainage into two different river systems, giving the community an unexpectedly layered geography for such a small place. The 2020 census counted 130 residents. Fortuna’s character comes from the mix of the ordinary and the memorable: a post office, a route through Moniteau County, a creek valley, and a name borrowed from ancient Rome.
