About Fountain

Fountain is a Fillmore County city about 30 miles south of Rochester, at the western end of the Root River State Trail. The 60-mile trail follows 42 miles of former Milwaukee Railroad bed along the Root River, so bicycles, hikers, and winter users arrive along the same corridor that once carried trains. Fountain's landscape is shaped by karst geology, with sinkholes common enough that the city is often called the sinkhole capital of the United States.

The Fillmore County History Center and Museum gives the city another strong connection to the wider region, while Trailside Park, the ball field, and smaller neighborhood parks keep daily recreation close to town. Fountain's calendar includes the Lutheran Lutefisk and Meatball Dinner each October, a local tradition with a very specific Minnesota accent. The 2020 census counted 409 residents. For a small place, Fountain has a clear pattern: the trail brings the old rail corridor back into use, and the ground beneath it tells a story written in limestone and water.
