Rochester’s story is famously tied to a disaster that reshaped its entire future. Back in 1883, a devastating tornado tore through the young prairie town, prompting local physician Dr. William Worrall Mayo and the Sisters of St. Francis to team up and care for the injured. That collaboration led to the opening of Saint Marys Hospital a few years later, laying the groundwork for what eventually grew into the world-renowned Mayo Clinic. Today, Mayo is the economic engine and heartbeat of the city, employing tens of thousands of residents and giving downtown Rochester its distinct, globally recognized medical identity.

Navigating the city in the dead of winter is surprisingly easy thanks to Rochester's extensive network of indoor skyways and underground pedestrian tunnels, known locally as subways. You can walk between medical buildings, hotels, student housing, restaurants, and shopping without ever putting on a heavy winter coat or stepping into the freezing cold. For longer trips across town, Rochester Public Transit provides convenient bus routes and park-and-ride options for commuters. The city is also enhancing its connectivity with the Link rapid transit line along Second Street Southwest, creating a dedicated, frequent corridor between the downtown core, Saint Marys, and west-side neighborhoods.

When warm weather arrives, downtown Rochester bursts into a lively outdoor community scene. During the summer, Thursdays Downtown takes over Peace Plaza and First Avenue, filling the heart of the city with dozens of local food vendors, craft artisans, and multiple stages of live music. On summer weekends, locals head to Mayo Park behind the Civic Center for the popular Riverside Concert Series, setting up lawn chairs and picnic blankets along the river for free live performances.
