Franklin CDP (Sacramento County), CA

Franklin is a small Sacramento County census-designated place about two miles west-southwest of Elk Grove, on the low ground of the southern Sacramento Valley. Andrew George founded the town in 1856 along Lower Stockton Road, the route that later became Franklin Boulevard. During the Gold Rush, that road carried stage traffic toward Stockton; the original settlement was called Georgetown, after George, while the Franklin House hotel supplied the name that eventually replaced it. The town became a center for the agricultural area around it and later a stop on the Western Pacific Railroad, shortening trips into Sacramento.

Education is part of Franklin’s identity. A school district began here in 1859, and Franklin Elementary remains the town’s one on-site school; Franklin High School and Toby Johnson Middle School opened in 2002 under Elk Grove Unified. The cemetery east of Franklin Elementary holds many early settlers and the grave of Alexander Hamilton Willard, a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition, marked as California Historical Landmark 657. Today Franklin’s everyday map runs through school grounds, the cemetery, Franklin Boulevard, and the larger Elk Grove service area. It is a small place with a name shaped by one hotel, a road that carried stagecoaches, and an educational network that kept the old settlement in use.
