Franklin Furnace, OH

Franklin Furnace is a Scioto County census-designated place along the Ohio River, named for an early iron ore blast furnace built in 1826. The furnace belonged to the Hanging Rock iron region, where southeastern Ohio's ore, coal, and fire clay fed a long run of ironworks. A post office followed in 1828, and the community kept the furnace's name after the operation itself was gone. Franklin Furnace is an Ohio place where an industrial name outlasted the furnace that put it on the map.
