Franklin Grove, IL

Franklin Grove is a Lee County village named for James R. Franklin, a pioneer who settled in a grove near the town site. The village later became part of the Lincoln Highway route, giving its small center a place in the story of the first transcontinental road. The H.I. Lincoln Building, constructed in 1860 by a distant relative of Abraham Lincoln, now holds the Lincoln Highway Association National Interpretive Center and a local welcome center. Four churches and the Winifred Knox Memorial Library add the everyday institutions of the village.

The Franklin Grove Area Historical Society keeps the past active at Chaplin Creek Village, a thirty-acre site with historic structures, open land, school programs, reenactments, and seasonal gatherings. The Summer Harvest Festival brings a Big Rig Show, vendors, food, and demonstrations, while other events focus on Revolutionary War and World War II history. Franklin Grove's local map stretches from the village streets to Chaplin Creek and the Lincoln Highway center. It is a small Illinois place with a strong road story, a preserved limestone building, and a historical society that knows how to turn old structures into a working calendar.
