Franklin, NE

Franklin is the county seat of Franklin County, Nebraska, and a city whose history includes a long fight over that title. The first Franklin City was named for Benjamin Franklin and served as the county seat after Governor David Butler organized the county in 1871. A countywide vote moved the seat to Bloomington in 1874, pulling businesses away from Franklin. The community rebuilt around a later town site and eventually won the county seat back in 1920.

The Franklin Academy opened in 1881 as one of Nebraska's Congregational Church academies, adding a school tradition to the courthouse story. Franklin incorporated on July 30, 1883, and the present city still carries the responsibilities of a small county center, with the courthouse, city hall, and county offices giving the town its civic focus. The repeated county-seat contests are the detail locals remember because they show why Franklin had to prove its staying power more than once. Set in south-central Nebraska farm country, the city combines a compact business district with the larger network of roads, records, schools, and county services that radiate from the courthouse.
