About Frederickson
Two restored dairy barns give Frederickson's principal public park an identity tied to the community's rural past. At the 64-acre Stan and Joan Cross Park, the former hay and dairy barns now form the Frederickson Community Center, with meeting and event space beside an accessible playground, picnic areas, restrooms, and a path into the adjoining Naches Trail Preserve. County records describe Frederickson's broader change from a rural area into a suburban community of homes and businesses. The census-designated place remains unincorporated and is governed by Pierce County; its population rose from 18,719 in 2010 to 24,906 in the 2020 census. Rapid growth is still a defining practical issue. Frederickson also contains a regionally designated manufacturing and industrial center, so residential development shares the area with goods-producing and distribution activity. Pierce County's Canyon Road Regional Connection is intended to create a more direct freight link between that employment area and the Port of Tacoma, though the multistage project is not yet complete.
Because Frederickson has no municipal government, a local land-use advisory commission reviews significant development proposals and makes recommendations to county decision-makers. County planning identifies park access as another current growth issue. Its 2026 parks work found comparatively little park and open space per resident, low tree-canopy coverage, and strong resident interest in playgrounds, sports fields, and places to walk or hike. Current priorities include planning access and improvements for the remaining southern portion of Cross Park and adding more recreation space in underserved areas. The community center's reservable rooms and kitchen support meetings and events, and county recreation programs use the Frederickson facility for activities serving participants of different ages and abilities.
