Fredonia, KS

Fredonia is the county seat of Wilson County, Kansas, a city laid out in 1868 beside the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway. The city had 1,945 residents in the 2020 census. The county-seat question was contested for years before a courthouse bond in 1885 settled the offices in Fredonia. That history left the city with a courthouse-square civic core, while the surrounding region later expanded during southeast Kansas's fossil-fuel boom. U.S. 400 and K-47 now meet at the edge of the city, linking the county seat with Wichita, Joplin, and communities across the state line.

Today's local map still puts civic and historical institutions close together. The public library stands on the former Congregational Church site, and the Wilson County Historical Society operates from the old sheriff's residence and jail on the square. City government also lists parks, recreation, and an industrial park among its current services. Fredonia's county offices, library, museum, and highway connections give the small city a regional role beyond its residential streets.
