Freeburg, PA

Freeburg is a small Snyder County borough surrounded by Washington Township, laid out in 1796 by Andrew Straub. The first name was Straubstown; Freeburg came later, as the settlement grew around the land Straub donated for a church and graveyard. That origin gives the borough an old Pennsylvania shape: a tiny village center, a church lot, and farm roads leading out into the township. The borough's footprint is just three-tenths of a square mile, so local landmarks are close together and the surrounding countryside arrives quickly.
