Freedom, PA

Freedom occupies a bend of the Ohio River in Beaver County, 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, and its founding was tied directly to river work. In 1832 steamboat builders Jonathan Betz and Stephen Phillips bought about 100 acres from General Abner Lacock and laid out streets around their boatyard. Fourteen houses were standing within the first week; by 1833 the settlement had 40 dwellings and 47 families. Boatbuilding and distilling led the early economy, followed later by Freedom Oil and Freedom Casket Company. The 1826 Vicary House, overlooking the river, is the old stone landmark that remains from the neighboring Vicary tract.

The borough still sits in a heavily connected Beaver Valley landscape, with the Ohio River, regional rail yards, and the Pittsburgh metro all close by. Freedom Area School District operates elementary, middle, and senior high schools, giving the borough a local school system across the river-facing neighborhoods. The borough history also remembers the 1896 merger of Saint Clair into Greater Freedom, part of the community's layered street plan and wards. Freedom's local clue is its industrial sequence: boatyard, river town, oil, caskets, and schools packed into the same small Ohio River borough.
