Freelandville, IN

Freelandville is a Knox County census-designated place in Widner Township that began as a crossroads settlement. When residents needed a post office in 1856, Dr. Freeland applied for one and the place received the name Freelandsville; Dr. Freeland later had town lots surveyed in 1866. The local story runs through farms and small industries: a brick yard on the Freelandville–Edwardsport road operated from about 1875 to 1912, and early stores, a hotel, a flour mill, and a field-tile works grew around the crossroads.

Bethel Church, east of town, gives Freelandville one of its strongest historical threads. The congregation organized in a log schoolhouse in 1847, built successive church buildings, and rebuilt after fires, with the present church dedicated after the 1934 lightning fire. The Freelandville community archive preserves school photographs, church history, and images of Elmer's saw mill, keeping local memory tied to people and buildings. Freelandville reads as a crossroads community whose identity was shaped by post, store, church, clay, and farm work.
