Freeman, MO

Freeman is a Cass County city in the Kansas City metropolitan area, with 475 residents in the 2020 census. It sits in the rolling farm country southeast of the metro, close to Harrisonville and the small communities along the Missouri–Kansas borderlands. The town’s everyday map is tied to Midway R-I School District, local churches, country roads, and the larger Cass County services reached by car. Metropolitan Community College also includes the Midway district area in its wider educational service network.

Freeman grew as a railroad town. The settlement was laid out on May 9, 1872, along the Missouri Pacific Railroad’s Arizona Division, and Cass County histories say its name came from a railroad brakeman. The ground had earlier belonged to the Osage, whose land was taken under the 1825 treaty after coercive negotiations; that history is part of the region’s deeper map. Today Freeman’s school, rail corridor, and surrounding fields connect it to Harrisonville and Kansas City.
