About Freeport

Freeport is a Stearns County city tucked inside Oak Township geographically, with I-94 and U.S. 52 carrying traffic past a town whose story started long before the interstate. A post office has operated here since 1881, the city took its name from Freeport, Illinois, and incorporation came in 1892. The old flour-mill story is the local clue: Swany White Flour Mills began in 1898, tying Freeport's early commercial life to grain, farm country, and the rail-and-road connections that moved it.

Two pieces of that past still stand out on the town map. The 1905 Church of the Sacred Heart and the remains of the Swany White mills are listed on the National Register, while the Smiley water tower has become the landmark people use to spot town from the highway. Freeport's current center is a mix of city hall, local businesses, churches, and agricultural service stops rather than a large commercial district. It is a small St. Cloud-area city with a clear sense of where its work came from: fields around town, flour in the old mill, and a water tower looking over Main Street.
