Frisco City, AL

Frisco City lies in southwest Monroe County, where two nineteenth-century settlements grew into a town shaped by mills, telephones, banks, and railroads. Lufkin and Snider came together as Jones Mill, named for a local businessman who owned a grist mill, and the town incorporated in 1909. It became Roy in 1913 after railroad owner Roy Megargel promised to extend a line to the community. When that promise failed, the name returned to Jones Mills in 1919.

The St. Louis–San Francisco Railroad bought the Gulf, Florida, and Alabama line in 1925 and brought tracks through in 1928. That connection gave the town the name Frisco City, which it still carries. The mayor-and-council government and small-town business pattern reflect Monroe County’s rural setting, while the railroad story helps account for the town’s several names in its past. Frisco City remains a local stopping point in the county, with its civic life built around the same practical mix of roads, services, and community institutions.
