Frisco, NC

Frisco occupies a long, narrow section of Hatteras Island between Buxton and Hatteras, with North Carolina Highway 12 doing the work of a main street and Cape Hatteras National Seashore setting the larger landscape. The community was once called Trent or Trent Woods; the post office changed the name to Frisco in 1898. Many homes are used as summer rentals, so the number of people in town changes with the season. Dare County Schools serve local students through Cape Hatteras Elementary and Cape Hatteras Secondary.

The Frisco Native American Museum gives the village a cultural institution with a very specific local history. It opened in 1987 in a building that had been a general store, post office, shell shop, and meeting place; exhibits include Native artifacts from across the country and a display about the Croatoan people associated with Hatteras Island. Nature trails pass through maritime forest and lead to a Natural History Center added in 2024. Frisco's daily map is a narrow island road joining homes, seashore land, schools, and a museum that keeps the island's Native history in view.
