Fritch, TX

Fritch is a Panhandle city perched near Lake Meredith, where the normally flat High Plains break into canyons and the Canadian River reservoir changes the horizon. The 2020 census counted 1,859 residents. Fritch sits in Moore and Hutchinson counties, about thirty-five miles northeast of Amarillo and thirteen miles west of Borger, but the lake is the town's most recognizable neighbor. Lake Meredith National Recreation Area, the Lake Meredith Historical Museum, and the National Park Service's area headquarters all put the water and canyon country into daily local awareness.

Fritch also has the kind of weather history people remember by date. A mile-wide, multi-vortex F4 tornado struck the area on June 27, 1992, damaging the city and injuring seven people without causing a death. On May 11, 2014, a fast-moving wildfire forced an evacuation and destroyed homes around the community. Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument lies about ten miles southwest along the lake, adding a much older human story to the landscape. Sanford-Fritch schools serve the town, while boating, fishing, camping, and hiking pull the wider recreation area into the local picture. Fritch is where a reservoir town, a working Panhandle community, and a very exposed landscape meet.
