Fromberg, MT

Fromberg had 392 residents in 2020, in Carbon County’s Clarks Fork Valley. The town began when the Northern Pacific Railway built a spur toward the Gebo coal mines in 1898 and named the depot for railroad stockholder Conrad Fromberg. William Swallow saw an opportunity beside the tracks and platted a six-block townsite in a T-shaped plan, with the main street running across the rails. Fromberg became known as the county’s fruit basket, with ranchers and growers using the railroad to reach distant markets.

The Clarks Fork Yellowstone River passes along the east side of town, while Montana Secondary Highway 310 follows the valley and the old railroad line. The original depot was later moved 75 feet and now houses the Clarks Fork Valley Museum, tying the town’s present-day cultural life to its railroad beginning. Gebo Mine and the nearby company town of Coalville supplied the industrial backdrop, while Fromberg High School and its Falcons keep education at the center of local life. It is a small Montana town with a very legible map: river, tracks, coal country, orchards, and a perpendicular main street.
