Fryeburg, ME

Fryeburg is the census-designated center of the town of Fryeburg in Oxford County, Maine. The 2020 census counted 1,444 people in the CDP, separate from the larger town’s population. The Saco River drains the valley, U.S. 302 and state Routes 5 and 113 shape the road network, and New Hampshire’s White Mountains rise just west. This is old Abenaki territory once known as Pequawket, a name tied to the river’s crooked bend. The larger town includes Fryeburg Academy, Har-Mac Steel, and the Fryeburg Fair, but the CDP is the compact center where local roads, shops, civic buildings, and school life collect.

Fryeburg’s calendar gets much bigger in October, when the Fryeburg Fair draws visitors across the region, while Academy semesters keep the center active through the rest of the year. Jockey Cap, the Saco River, the Mountain Division Rail Trail, and White Mountain National Forest are all close enough to shape weekend plans. The town also has ordinary year-round work behind the mountain scenery. The useful distinction here is simple: Fryeburg CDP is the settled center, while the town of Fryeburg spreads over a larger mix of farms, woods, river land, and mountain-edge roads.
