Gadsden, SC

Gadsden is a Richland County census-designated place in the rural southern edge of the Columbia metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 1,632 residents. South Carolina Highway 48, also known as Bluff Road, meets Highway 769 at the center of the local road map, with the two routes carrying residents toward Columbia, Hopkins, and the surrounding farms. Gadsden Elementary is part of Richland County School District One, and the school, churches, county roads, and nearby National Guard facilities give the community its practical structure.

The place name honors James Gadsden, who led the South Carolina Railroad in the 1840s; a station built here in 1840 was the first railroad station in Richland County. The historic landscape still has several listed properties, including the John J. Kaminer House, Magnolia, Oakwood, and Richland Presbyterian Church. Those sites range from an 1850s plantation house to an 1880s cottage and a nineteenth-century church, giving the community a visible architectural record along roads that now serve the wider Columbia area. Gadsden's day-to-day life remains school, church, commuting, and rural county roads.
