Galena, IN

Galena is a Floyd County census-designated place on the roads west of New Albany, including the historic village of Galena and nearby Floyds Knobs. The 2020 census counted 1,726 residents. The settlement began as Germantown, platted in 1837, and took the Galena name when its post office opened in 1843. Today US 150 is the main local corridor, running past the Galena Digital Library and toward Floyd Central High School. Daily routines are spread along that corridor and the surrounding ridges. The library occupies a restored nineteenth-century house and serves as the community's digital branch, while Floyd Central High School serves Galena and nearby Floyds Knobs.

Galena-Lamb Park, a 35.5-acre county park, provides fields, a basketball court, a playground, shelter, and restrooms for the nearby communities. The surrounding ridges and subdivisions keep the settlement pattern spread out. Galena is a small southern Indiana crossroads where an old village, a school corridor, and a library in a historic house make up the practical center.
