About Galva
Galva was founded in 1854 by cousins William and James Wiley as a railroad town in southern Henry County. Its name points across the Atlantic to Gavle, Sweden, reflecting the Swedish communities around Bishop Hill and the city's long Scandinavian thread. The old rail town still has a History Walk in Veterans Park, the Wiley House Museum in the founders' home, and the 1878 Galva Opera House. Black Hawk College also keeps a campus here, giving the town an educational connection beyond its school district. Galva is the kind of western Illinois place where a railroad, a Swedish namesake, and a park full of local memory all meet.
