Gann (Brinkhaven), OH

Gann, better known locally as Brinkhaven, is a village on the east side of the Mohican River in Union Township, Knox County. The community has carried several names: Mount Holly was mapped in 1838, the post office opened in 1844 as Nonpareil, and the railroad later used Gann for a station named after George Gann. The village was incorporated under Gann in 1872, then the railroad changed the stop to Brinkhaven in 1890. That sounds like a naming tangle, but it is the key to the place: the river settlement and the railroad town are the same community seen at different moments.

Today the Mohican River, the old rail corridor, and the Bridge of Dreams are the visual clues. The bridge carries the Ohio to Erie Trail and is a major local landmark in this bend of Knox County. Public planning documents may still use Gann as the legal village name, while village signs and local government use Brinkhaven. The local scoop is that Gann and Brinkhaven are not two places to sort out; they are two chapters of one village, first shaped by river crossings and farms, then by railroads, and now by trails, covered-bridge traffic, and the Mohican valley.
