Ariel-Foundation Park is one of the most unique local spots in Mount Vernon. Built on the grounds of a former glass plant, the 250-acre park creatively blends preserved brick ruins with walking trails, quarry lakes, and open green lawns. You can climb the stairs of the Rastin Observation Tower, a repurposed factory smokestack, for a great view across the entire county. Just north of the park, downtown Mount Vernon revolves around a classic brick Public Square anchored by the Knox County Courthouse. Main Street is filled with independent coffee shops, small boutiques, and local diners, along with the restored Woodward Opera House, which still stages live music and theater throughout the year. Mount Vernon Nazarene University sits just southeast of the center, adding a steady collegiate presence and regular community events. With nearby riverfront parks along the Kokosing offering easy access for kayaking and fishing, downtown has an inviting small-town rhythm with plenty to do on a Saturday morning.
