Garden City, MO

Garden City is a Cass County city on Missouri 7, with 1,579 residents at the 2020 census and Kansas City about fifty miles to the northwest. The town was platted in 1885, incorporated in 1897, and took its name from the fertile ground around the site. A post office had already been using the name since 1875, so the name arrived before the formal town plan. Panther Creek begins just southeast of town, adding a small waterway to the agricultural map.

Garden City's identity also has a family story worth knowing. Tony and Minnie Washington, descendants of George Washington, lived here, and the city still carries that connection in its local history. The Sherwood Cass R-VIII School District covers a wide rural area, with its campus outside nearby Creighton, while the town's location on Route 7 keeps it tied to the wider Kansas City region. Garden City is a small Cass County place built on soil, postal history, and a road that runs through the southeast corner of the county.
