Garden Prairie, IL

Garden Prairie is a Boone County census-designated place at the meeting of Garden Prairie Road and US 20, roughly between Marengo and Belvidere. It began as Amesville, a settlement whose post office opened in 1838; the name changed to Garden Prairie in 1853. Residents incorporated the village in 2008 and voted to dissolve it two years later. The community now carries a former village name across an unincorporated county setting, with the old prairie crossroads still doing the geographic work.

The Garden Prairie Post Office is at 6820 Pleasant Street in ZIP 61038, and the Illinois Department of Transportation's Boone County highway map places the settlement beside US 20, Garden Prairie Road, and the Union Pacific railroad. Belvidere Community Unit School District 100 includes Garden Prairie, linking this small center to the school system serving the Belvidere area.
