Garland, TN

Garland is a Tipton County town named for Dr. John Crawley Garland, a physician who practiced in the community. The town incorporated through a private act of the Tennessee General Assembly in 1913, and the 2020 census counted 289 residents. Garland sits in the West Tennessee farm country between the county seat at Covington and the smaller communities around it, with a compact street pattern and homes gathered around a small municipal center.

Town business now runs through the community center, where meetings are held on the second Tuesday evening, and through a town office open during the workweek. Garland is one of Tipton County's incorporated communities, but its daily scale is closer to a rural crossroads than a county hub. The doctor's name remains the strongest piece of its early story, while the community center, local government, and roads toward Covington give the town its present shape.
