About Garretson

Garretson is a Minnehaha County city that grew out of a rail junction formed in 1889, after businesses moved north from the earlier village of Palisades to meet the new lines. The town’s name comes from banker A. S. Garretson, one of the investors behind that move. Nearby Devil’s Gulch carries the local Jesse James legend, while Split Rock Park and Palisades State Park follow the gorge and creek through the area. Garretson is a railroad town with a frontier story attached to its rocks and a trio of parks close to the city.
