Garwood, NJ

At under one square mile, Garwood is a tiny, close-knit borough sitting right between Westfield and Cranford. Often called the Small Town with a Big Heart, it grew out of an old railroad and factory hub into a quiet residential community. The NJ Transit train tracks cut directly through town, creating two simple neighborhoods: numbered streets to the north and tree-named streets to the south. Over the past couple of decades, redevelopment has turned several former industrial sites into modern condos and townhomes, giving buyers a choice between classic mid-century houses and newer low-maintenance properties.

Because Garwood is so compact, your exact location has a big impact on daily life. Homes within a block or two of North and South Avenues give you an easy walk to coffee shops, dinner spots, and the train platform, though you will notice more traffic and train noise. If you prefer a quieter setting, look a few blocks further into the residential side streets. Many single-family homes here are older, so pay close attention to basement dryness, updated wiring, and past additions during home tours. It is also wise to check local drainage and flood maps, and drop by the station during your usual commuting hours to test the trip.

Daily commuting is simple thanks to the Raritan Valley Line station in the middle of town, which connects riders to Newark and New York Penn Station. Along North and South Avenues, you will find casual restaurants, neighborhood pubs, and Crossroads, a well-known local venue for live music. Hartman Park covers outdoor recreation on the north side, Unami Park offers larger open green spaces to the south, and the Myrtle Avenue complex features ballfields and a walking track. You are also just minutes away from the bigger downtown districts in Westfield and Cranford, making it easy to enjoy nearby shopping and dining while living in a smaller, quieter community.
