Geneva, IN (Town)

Geneva is a small Adams County town in the Wabash Township grid, but its local identity is tied to a place that reaches far beyond the county line. Limberlost Cabin, at 202 E. Sixth Street, was completed in 1895 for writer and naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter, who lived there with her family until 1913. The house now operates as a state historic site, keeping the Limberlost landscape and her work in view. A Girl of the Limberlost made the surrounding swamp part of the town's cultural vocabulary, and the Limberlost name still turns up around town.

Daily life is organized around the services of a small town, with the Geneva branch of the Adams Public Library System on East Line Street and South Adams Schools serving local children from a K-12 campus four miles north in Berne. That school arrangement points to Geneva's regional ties: errands, classes, county services, and work run along the towns of Adams County. The cabin gives Geneva a recognizable story, while the library, school district, and town government are the places where that story meets ordinary life.
