About Georgetown

Georgetown is a Vermilion County city with an unusually bendy origin story: James Haworth platted the town to the length of a grapevine. The place was established in 1826, got its first post office in 1828, and picked up a railroad connection in 1871 when the Paris and Danville line arrived. Illinois Route 1 and U.S. 150 still frame the town’s road map, while the Little Vermilion River forms its southern edge and drops over a dam at the city’s boundary. Georgetown is east-central Illinois in a river-and-rail shape.
