Georgetown-Quitman County, GA

Georgetown-Quitman County is Georgia's consolidated city-county government, built around Georgetown on the Alabama line beside Lake Walter F. George and the Chattahoochee River. Quitman County was created in 1858, and Georgetown - first called Tobanana after a nearby creek - was chosen as the county seat and incorporated in 1859. In 2006, Georgetown and Quitman County voters approved consolidation, creating Georgia's fifth unified government. The 1939 brick courthouse and the old Quitman County Jail keep the county-seat story visible, while the lake fills much of the western map. Georgetown-Quitman County is a Georgia place where city, county, river, and lake share one set of lines.
