Gibbon, MN

Gibbon is a Sibley County city in Minnesota, where the 2020 census counted 784 residents. It began as a railway town among German and Scandinavian immigrants around 1865, incorporated in 1887, and took its name from General John Gibbon, a Fort Snelling commandant. Minnesota State Highway 19 meets Sibley County Road 2 at the city, linking the town to farm country and nearby communities. The old rail-town layout remains visible in the compact center and the roads leading out to fields.

Gibbon's present-day map is organized around schools as much as roads. GFW Independent School District 2365 has its district office and elementary school here, while Prairie Lutheran School serves families across the Fairfax-Gibbon-Winthrop area. The city grew from a rail line, while its current civic rhythm comes through school buildings, county roads, agricultural landscapes, and the old town center. Gibbon's name points back to Fort Snelling; its streets point to immigrant settlement and a railway; and its schools keep those strands connected in a small Sibley County city.
