Gila Bend, AZ

Gila Bend is a Maricopa County town named for the big bend in the Gila River. The 2020 census counted 1,892 residents. It sits on an old travel corridor between the Southwest and the lower Colorado River country, about 70 miles southwest of Phoenix, with Interstate 8 and State Route 85 doing the modern work. The town's history starts with a Hohokam settlement and canal system, then moves through Gila Station, a Butterfield Overland Stage stop built in 1858, burned, and rebuilt. Even now, Gila Bend feels like a place built for people passing through.

The stopover role is only part of the story. The Gatlin Site is a National Historic Landmark, the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail passes through the area, and Painted Rock Petroglyph Site sits west along the old river routes. Town parks add the everyday side: soccer and baseball fields, playgrounds, ramadas, walking paths, and picnic tables. Gila Bend also has a municipal airport and a growing energy economy, with utility-scale solar among its newer industries.
