Goodyear, AZ

Goodyear owes its unusual name to the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, which bought thousands of acres of desert here in 1917 to grow cotton for airplane tires. During World War II, the town expanded into aircraft manufacturing, officially incorporating shortly after the war in 1946. Today, you will still see nods to that heritage all over town, from major thoroughfares like Litchfield Road to the aerospace businesses operating alongside quiet suburban neighborhoods.

Much of that aviation legacy lives on at Phoenix Goodyear Airport, which started as a naval airfield and now serves as a major training ground for commercial pilots. Goodyear has evolved into one of the West Valley's top employment hubs, drawing companies in aerospace, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing along the Interstate 10 and Loop 303 corridors. With Luke Air Force Base just to the north, military jets overhead are a familiar sight, but the city balances its strong job base with spacious master-planned communities and scenic desert views.

Goodyear Ballpark gives the city another standout attraction as the Cactus League spring training home for both the Cleveland Guardians and Cincinnati Reds. Every February and March, baseball fans fill the stadium and surrounding neighborhood with energy. When the major league teams head home, the complex remains an active community gathering spot throughout the rest of the year, hosting youth tournaments, holiday celebrations, movie nights on the lawn, and local festivals.

For a long time, Goodyear grew as a collection of separate residential developments without a traditional downtown. That shifted with the launch of Goodyear Civic Square at GSQ. This new central district features a modern library, City Hall, and a two-acre town lawn designed for outdoor concerts and seasonal events. As new dining, shopping, and entertainment options continue to open around the plaza, GSQ gives residents a walkable gathering place to meet up and spend an evening out.
