Gilman, IL

Gilman calls itself the City of Crossroads, and the name is earned. In Iroquois County, Interstate 57 and U.S. 24/45 meet near the southwest side of town, where an industrial park has access to the Illinois Central and Toledo, Peoria and Western railroads. That transportation pattern links Gilman to Chicago, Champaign, and the farm communities of east-central Illinois while keeping the town tied to freight, agriculture, and local services.

Downtown Gilman gives the crossroads a human scale. The Gilman Historical Society keeps its collection on Central Street, six churches serve the community, and the school district draws students from Gilman and nearby Danforth, Thawville, and Onarga. Grain, school buses, and passing trucks all use the same network of streets and crossings. The city has also been working through drainage, sewer replacement, and downtown streetscape projects, so infrastructure is part of the local story rather than background detail. Gilman is a small county city whose strongest identity comes from how roads, rails, schools, and the central business district meet.
