About Girard

Girard became Crawford County’s seat in 1868 after being founded beside the surveyed line of the Kansas City, Fort Scott and Gulf Railroad. The city was named for Girard, Pennsylvania, the former home of trustee Charles Strong, and its founders were competing with nearby Crawfordsville for the county’s attention. Later, Girard became nationally known for the Appeal to Reason, the socialist newspaper published here, with Eugene Debs spending time in town and working with the paper. The local shorthand is county-seat courthouse, railroad rivalry, and a Kansas city with an unexpectedly loud radical press history.
