Glasgow, OR

Glasgow is an unincorporated community and census-designated place on the north side of Coos Bay, about six miles north of Coos Bay and just east of U.S. 101. The 2020 census counted 785 residents. Land speculators started the community in the 1890s, but Glasgow languished for roughly three decades. The Oregon Coast Highway and a ferry connection to North Bend finally made the north side a practical stop, and the McCullough Bridge changed the crossing again when it opened in 1936.

Glasgow still has the small pieces that tell you where the old center was: a Grange Hall, a fire station, and a grocery with a gas pump. Coos Bay and North Bend provide the water system, while individual septic systems serve residences and businesses. North Bend School District covers the schools. The community sits in the overlap between bay country and the highway, with Coos Bay's timber, shipbuilding, and shipping history close enough to shape the regional backdrop. Glasgow's own story is smaller and more specific: a speculative town that waited for a road, a ferry, and a bridge to make its location work.
