Glasgow, VA

Glasgow is a Rockbridge County town at the confluence of the James and Maury Rivers, about six miles east of Natural Bridge. Its older center grew with the railroad and still reads like a river transportation town, with the Glasgow Historic District holding onto the commercial, residential, and civic buildings from that boom period. The rivers are the real organizing feature, though: they brought trade, shaped industry, and have also made flooding part of Glasgow’s story.

Hurricane Camille inundated the business district in 1969, and the old Balcony Falls Dam was removed in 1973 as flood concerns changed how the river corridor was managed. Today Glasgow sits beside the James River Wilderness Area, with trails and river access close by, while Natural Bridge gives the area a major regional landmark. There is even a roadside oddity in the town’s past: from 2001 to 2007, fiberglass dinosaurs stood along the road and became part of Glasgow’s local lore. Put it together and Glasgow is a river town with a railroad-era core, a hard-earned flood memory, and a wonderfully strange side note.
