Glassport, PA

Glassport is an Allegheny County borough on the east bank of the Monongahela River, about ten miles south of Pittsburgh and close to the point where the Monongahela and Allegheny become the Ohio. The 2020 census counted 4,475 residents. The borough was built around the United States Glass Company, whose plant opened near the river in 1894; the Glassport Land Company laid out the surrounding town, and Glassport incorporated as a separate borough in 1902. Pressed glass and tableware made the riverfront factory the first big chapter, while other industries followed into the Mon Valley.

A 1963 tornado damaged the plant badly enough to stop the furnaces, leaving a massive block of cooled glass inside the building. Today the flat river corridor, borough streets, South Allegheny schools, and Pittsburgh's nearby pull define the place more than a single factory does. Glassport's local scoop is a Pennsylvania borough whose name came from a land company, whose streets grew around a glass mill, and whose riverfront still carries the feel of a working industrial town.
