Glen Burnie, MD

Harundale Mall put Glen Burnie at the front of a major change in Maryland retail. James W. Rouse opened the state's first enclosed shopping center here on October 1, 1958; the building was demolished in 1998 and 1999, and Harundale Plaza now carries the name. Glen Burnie has no municipal government; county roads and commercial corridors organize much of its community activity. County revitalization areas cover Harundale-Ritchie Highway and the town center's north, core, and south sections. The town-center core lies around Crain Highway and Baltimore–Annapolis Boulevard, roughly two-thirds of a mile from the Cromwell/Glen Burnie rail station. By August 2026, the library replacement was in schematic design, and plaza work remained planned for fiscal 2027; existing shops, services, and civic buildings stayed open. Medical care is one of the community's defining workplaces. University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center opened on July 4, 1965, as North Arundel Hospital and joined the University of Maryland Medical System in 2000.

In 2025, the medical center had 310 beds, over 3,100 team members, and 1,000 medical providers. Anne Arundel Community College also maintains its Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism Institute in Glen Burnie Town Center. Beyond those institutions, the county's adopted Region 3 plan connects the local economy to small businesses, nearby BWI Airport and Fort Meade, and the wider Baltimore–Washington region. The Cromwell/Glen Burnie and Ferndale stations place the community on Maryland's light-rail corridor toward Baltimore and Hunt Valley, while county Route 203 runs between Glen Burnie and Parole. Hospital shifts, airport-related work, college activity, shopping, and civic errands occur in different parts of the community. In March 2026, a 13-acre county site a quarter-mile from Cromwell station entered redevelopment as Villages at Sawmill Creek; initial preparation and demolition began in spring, with housing and trail connections still ahead.

In 1923, volunteers organized the Glen Burnie Free Public Library; it moved into the purpose-built Kuethe Library in 1934 and joined the county system in 1957. A separate county branch had opened in 1953. The two lineages came together in 1991, when Kuethe's holdings moved to North County Library. The current Glen Burnie branch stands at 1010 Eastway, across Ritchie Highway from Harundale Plaza, and continues that public role with collections, programs, meeting space, and computer access. Its location joins two strands of local history within a few blocks: the site associated with Maryland's first enclosed mall and a library tradition sustained for a century. The most locally revealing outing circles the neighboring airport.

Anne Arundel County's 12-mile BWI Trail circles BWI, and the Thomas A. Dixon Jr. Aircraft Observation Area on Dorsey Road gives trail users a direct view of arriving and departing aircraft. A spur reaches the light-rail corridor at Linthicum. Elsewhere, Sawmill Creek Park brings ball fields, courts, a skate area, fishing, and trails onto a large site west of the town center, and the North Arundel Aquatic Center offers indoor swimming throughout the year. The airport setting makes Glen Burnie's regional position visible: bicycles pass around the perimeter, aircraft descend nearby, and trains run along the route toward Baltimore. Back on Ritchie Highway, the library faces the shopping-center site that helped introduce Maryland to indoor-mall retail. A bicycle ride beneath incoming aircraft and a library visit beside Harundale put two of Glen Burnie's defining regional stories into an ordinary day.
