Glen Ellyn, IL

Located about 25 miles west of downtown Chicago, Glen Ellyn combines leafy, rolling streets with plenty of historic charm. The village grew out of two early settlements: Stacy’s Corners to the north and a bustling railroad stop to the south. In 1889, residents dammed a local stream to create Lake Ellyn, giving the town both its centerpiece and its permanent name. Today, around 28,000 people call the village home. Stacy’s Corners remains a handy commercial crossroad, while the downtown area around the train tracks serves as the main gathering spot, packed with independent boutiques, coffee shops, and busy dinner spots.

House hunters will find mostly established neighborhoods shaded by mature oak trees. The architecture varies widely across town, featuring everything from Queen Anne Victorians and mid-century ranches to modern custom builds and low-maintenance townhomes near the center of town. Because the village is largely built out, buyers often choose between turnkey updated properties and classic houses ready for a personal touch. Living near downtown puts you within an easy walk of morning coffee and the train, while the surrounding residential pockets offer quiet streets and generous yards. For everyday errands and big-box retail, Roosevelt Road along the southern commercial corridor keeps heavier traffic away from residential areas.

Getting around is straightforward thanks to great transit links. The downtown Metra station on the Union Pacific West line carries commuters into Chicago in about 45 minutes. Running right alongside the tracks, the Illinois Prairie Path gives cyclists, runners, and dog walkers miles of continuous trail across DuPage County without having to navigate street traffic. Drivers also have quick access to both I-355 and I-88. On the south side of town, the College of DuPage adds a great local amenity, offering community classes, athletic facilities, and live theater and touring music acts at the McAninch Arts Center.

Lake Ellyn is the everyday heart of the community. Neighbors gather along the paved loop around the water to walk dogs, push strollers, picnic on the lawns, and admire the historic 1930s boathouse. The park district keeps recreation options full with youth sports at the Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center, along with neighborhood parks and seasonal ice skating. Local traditions bring everyone out into the streets throughout the year, especially the Fourth of July parade and lakeside fireworks, summer music festivals, and holiday walks. It is a welcoming, easy place to settle into, offering a warm community feel alongside classic suburban convenience.
