Glenmora, LA

Glenmora grew in the pine forest of central Louisiana after a rail line connected Alexandria with Lake Charles. The railroad brought logging jobs and a town that expanded quickly along the line. As the timber thinned and cleared land opened, truck farming took over, with strawberries becoming the town’s signature crop. The shift from forest to fields is still the most useful way to understand Glenmora’s past: rails brought the mills, and agriculture kept the community going after the first timber boom.

Today Glenmora remains a Rapides Parish town with a K-12 school, local government, churches, and a working landscape that still includes timber and nursery businesses. The Patriot, published in Glenmora from 1918 to 1955, gives the town a newspaper chapter, while nearby forest-heritage sites preserve the larger lumber story of the parish. The town also produced state figures such as Claude Kirkpatrick, who later helped develop Toledo Bend Reservoir. Glenmora’s present is small-scale, but its history reaches through railroads, strawberries, timber, and the people who carried those industries outward.
