Glennallen, AK

Glennallen is the most populated community in the Copper River Census Area, a crossroads at the meeting of the Richardson and Glenn highways. Ahtna people have lived in the Copper River Basin for a millennium, and Ahtna, Incorporated is headquartered here. The Copper River gives the region its name and its working geography, while Glennallen’s stores, schools, medical services, and highway traffic make it the supply hub for communities spread across the basin.

The place grew out of transportation and military-era road building. An Army pack trail between Valdez and Eagle passed through Copper River Valley in 1899; later roads and the Glenn Highway turned a camp into a regional service center. Today travelers use Glennallen as a base for Wrangell–St. Elias National Park, Lake Louise State Recreation Area, and Dry Creek State Recreation Site, while residents rely on the same highway corridor for supplies and services. Glennallen is an Alaska place defined by distance: a few roads, a huge basin, and one practical center in the middle.
