Gnadenhutten, OH

Gnadenhutten sits along the Tuscarawas River in a valley where Ohio history is impossible to separate from memory. Moravian Christians founded the settlement in 1772, working with Lenape people who had embraced the church’s mission. During the Revolutionary War, Pennsylvania militiamen killed 96 pacifist Christian Lenape at the village on March 8–9, 1782. The massacre is central to Gnadenhutten’s identity, and the town’s historic sites and monuments preserve the names, places, and consequences of that violence. A candid account of the village has to hold both the Moravian settlement story and the Lenape lives at its center.

The present-day village is also a working Tuscarawas County community. Indian Valley Local School District serves local students, while the Fourth of July brings horse-drawn carriages and fireworks through town. Pioneer Days arrives in August, and the Apple Butter festival follows in October, giving the calendar a distinctly local shape. The New Philadelphia-Dover area supplies larger regional connections, but Gnadenhutten’s own landmarks keep attention on the river, the old mission ground, and the responsibility to remember what happened there. Its history is difficult, but it is not hidden behind a polished pioneer story.
